 Orthoceras Sculpture

The Orthoceras is very similar to the ammonite,
only it has a straight shell. The word Orthoceras
means “straight horn” and refers to

its shape. They are also referred to as the

original squid. They are some of the oldest

known fossils to man from 300to 500 million

years old. The group of cephalopods called

Orthoceratoids had straight to slightly curved

external shells, which are common fossils in
Paleozoic rock. The Orthoceras from Morocco
occur as white fossil in a dark gray or black
marble matrix and also in a brown marble matrix.
The result is a fossil with very good contrast.
